THE SHARING OF EXPERIENCE
MENTORING VS FORMAL EDUCATION
Mentoring is the passing on of experience, usually in an informal setting where the focus is on the needs of the individual, and where the need for, and "value" of, that experience is usually more immediate and obvious. Education is the passing on of knowledge, usually in a formal setting where the focus is on a curriculum, often resulting in a formal recognition, where those giving the recognition, are themselves qualified to do so, and where the value is usually more long term.
WHAT IS THE MENTORING MARKETPLACE?
Put simply it's a platform to connect members of our profession, where there's a need for a transfer of experience, knowledge or guidance.
It is a place to explore and engage with experienced, knowledgeable professionals that will benefit:
the professional who wants to give back to the industry
the emerging professional who's ready to take it to the next level
the enthusiastic amateur who just wants to become a better photographer
the confident seasoned professional who understands that acquiring new knowledge is powerful
We all want a strong and thriving profession in the future. We want a way to capture and pass on the valuable knowledge and collective experience of many generations before. More importantly, we want a way to recognise, and help you monetise, the real commercial value of your experience and knowledge.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TD BE A MENTOR?
Given that mentoring is the passing on of experience, the key requirement to be a mentor is to have that experience! We understand that "being experienced" is an entirely variable concept, and one person's "experienced" is another person's "naivety", so to provide a basic structure we define "being experienced" as having a minimum of seven years' experience in the area(s) in which you wish to mentor.
WHO CAN BE A MENTOR?
Accredited Members with a minimum of five years' experience will be encouraged to become mentors on the MM, especially if you are offering mentoring in the first three core CPD areas related to your craft:
This doesn't mean that if you're already mentoring (which we know many of you are) that you cannot continue to mentor outside of the platform; you can think of it as exposure through an additional marketing stream.
BENEFITS OF MENTORING
Cast your mind back to the time when you were starting out, the unknown is a scary place, imagine having a person to guide and encourage you to develop your own style and challenge your thinking, this would have been invaluable, right?
The AIPP's Mentoring Marketplace is coming, information sessions and our official launch will be at Lenscape 2018. We'd love your feedback, thoughts and input, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
